Sea Turtle Festival in Riviera Maya

Sea Turtle Festival in Riviera Maya

One of the favorite places for sea turtles to nest and lay their eggs is Central America, and within that area, from mid-April, any visitor can see these animals in the process, if it is the right time (at night) and has enough care not to frighten them.

The Mexican state of Quintana Roo occupies the entire eastern coastline of the Yucatan Peninsula and is one of the most frequented places in the country, but that hasn´t stopped the turtles to live and nest in the area. Of the seven sea turtle species, Mexico is home to six, four of which frequent the coast of Quintana Roo. (green, leatherback, hawksbill and loggerhead).

But unfortunately these turtles are in serious danger of extinction, and because of that in 2003 Tulum´s Sea Turtle Festival was created. This Festival takes place in Tulum and 3 other venues: -Xcacelito sanctuary, Chemuyil and Akumal. It represents the work of several NGOs in collaboration with public and private sponsors; the program includes academic, educational, artistic, cultural and recreational activities all join as an effort to raise public awareness in the care of the sea turtles in the area.

A few beaches in Playa del Carmen Hotels, receive turtles to nest their eggs, these hotels have special programs to keep safe the eggs, if you are lucky to stay in one of these you might be able to take part of a turtle liberation program.

This year the 11th Sea Turtle Festival will be held October 17-20. Don´t hesitate, visit Riviera Maya, plan a romantic trip and let us pamper you at Le Reve Hotel and Spa. (Playa del Carmen Hotel) While you are here, visit the Sea Turtle Festival and if you are lucky you will be able to watch turtles hatch from their egg!
